He also often wears jeans and sneakers, too, just because he feels so constricted in work clothes. He likes his clothes to feel soft and loose, and he absolutely hates ties. He'll only wear them once in a while, to get the school board off his back for a while. Usually he just dresses like his students.

OVERALL PERSONALITY , Caludio has a good heart. He is kind, not just to please some God, or because the church tells him he has to, but because that's the way he was raised. He feels that being nice is not, as many people think, a bad thing, or that it makes him naive and gullible. He honestly feels that in order to get compassion and understanding out of the world, you need to give it. Call it the Golden Rule, or say he ripped off Paul McCartney's line from The End, but Claudio just says it's his way of life. He is humble and soft-spoken, gracious and empathetic, and nothing can change that. He can see a thousand things go wrong and still find something good. He has this undying faith, not in God, but in the people of the earth, that they are truly good at heart, and every day he feels justified in saying so. And no matter how often you bother him, or expose him to the harsh underbelly of life, he will never accept that evil could ever possibly triumph over good.
These may sound like pretty heavy-duty religious beliefs, but Claudio sort of pieced his ideas together by reading philosophy books. He is not a fan of the sort of cultish religious feel that the island has; he believes that God, whatever that is, couldn't care less if you prayed in a church or a dirty alleyway. Claudio does not think, either, that God is this awful, frightening being that lots of people make him out to be. He often tells his students that priests may be something to be scared of, yes, but not God. God has a sense of humor. And so does Claudio. He likes to make people laugh, though his jokes are not usually very loud or obnoxious; they are not typical jokes, persay. He is more witty and subtle than that, often using puns or things of that effect to draw a laugh.
Claudio likes to feel inspired, and for him that means a lot of things. He gets inspired by music, so he tends to go to a lot of concerts, often bumping into his students and creating a bit of an awkward situation. He's also inspired by art and film, so when he's not at a concert he's at an art gallery, or the movie theater. Surprisingly enough, he is not very inspired by church. Actually, he hates going, because it feels so ritualized and wrong. You can't tell someone when to worship, or how to worship, or what to worship, if they even worship at all. Yes, sometimes the speaker will say something incredibly moving or touching, but those instances come few and far between, especially these days. It's more likely that Claudio will feel moved watching a battle scene from Lord of the Rings, honestly.

OVERALL HISTORY ,
When Claudio was six years old, his mother died. He doesn't remember much about her, though his father insists that she was practically a saint. The only thing Claud really remembers about her is one time when he was about four, and they were at the beach. She was already sick, then, with cancer, and most of the time she stayed in her beach chair, needing support every time she wanted to get up. But Claudio would sit on her lap, around sunset time, and she would sing to him, or tell him a story. One time, though, the time Claudio really remembers, she played cat's cradle with him. You know that string game? And Claudio thought it was the most amazing thing in the world, the way she twirled that string around her fingers. And that's how he'll always picture her: playing with string on a beach, with a sunset in front of her.
And at times Claudio wishes she was still around. His father never got remarried; he kind of died when his wife did, and Claudio never really experienced having a mother. But it didn't turn him into a tough, cold-hearted person, quite the opposite. He turned out very warm and kind, with a heart that seemed unbreakable. His father didn't really know how it happened. After his wife died, he pretty much sat around for five or six years, painting sad songs and trying to avoid his son-- he had her eyes. But when Claudio was twelve they really started to have a relationship, bonding over some Skip Bolen photographs and really good jazz records. From then on, they talked every day, and became quite close, more like friends than a father and son, really. Claudio would sit and watch him paint or sculpt, wishing he could do the same. But Claud was a pretty shabby artist, in the technical sense of the word, and he didn't have his dad's talent in the fine arts.
However, Claudio could write. He wrote a lot as a teenager, getting made fun of in high school for writing in a 'diary'. But writing was the only way he could keep himself sane, really, so he went through high school with virtually no friends, just because he liked to write. He wrote short stories, mostly, but dabbled in poetry. His writings were commentaries on life; sex, art, religion, rock and roll. Real things that real people cared about, but some people felt were too "controversial", mostly the conservatives, because he was telling the truth. The thing the conservatives didn't notice was that every single thing Claudio wrote had hope and goodness in it; it was okay to enjoy sex, to have a drink once in a while, to not go to college, to skip church if you pleased. And although his religious-based essays never got past his editor's desk, a few of his stories got published in the paper.
The University took notice of him then, and although he wasn't quite finished with his own schooling, they liked what they saw. Claudio was a fresh, young face for the stodgy-old University's image, and they wanted him. He gladly accepted. Times were tough, money was tight, and Claud had his dad to look after besides, so he took up post as an English professor, focusing more on writing, though his students read lots too. Claudio didn't expect teaching to be so much fun. His students were really bright and funny, not much younger than him, so he felt he could really have fun with them. His classes mostly consisted of long discussions, with plenty of laughter, usually topped off with a few date requests from some of his more courageous students-- male and female. Claudio never accepted, he is a virtue after all.
